Since dropping the WWE Championship to John Cena at WrestleMania 29 in 2013, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson has devoted himself entirely to his career in Hollywood, where he is currently the highest paid actor. But he could return for one last fight that would take place in Los Angeles at WrestleMania 39.
At least those are the plans that WWE has, which wants to put The Rock against Roman Reigns for what would be Johnson’s retirement bout. This possibility has been brewing for years, but it seems to be getting closer and closer to becoming a reality.
It would give WWE great publicity
Triple H wants to make a good impression at his first Royal Rumble event on Jan. 28, for which he has already broken record entries. And there is speculation that The Rock could make an appearance there and finish the storyline with the match against Reigns at WM39.
Dave Meltzer posted on Wrestling Observer Newsletter: “The idea was being talked about backstage, but as best as we can tell, while the rumors certainly exist within the company, as far as who would be in a position to know, there’s no real answer. If Johnson wants to do it and can be sold on the idea, it would be the most perfect scenario for the company.”
If he wants to participate, The Rock should confirm soon
Almost everything is set for WrestleMania, but everything has to be locked down by mid-January, so if The Rock plans to accept, he’ll need to confirm to the company first.
“Originally, the belief was that if his schedule permitted, Johnson would likely make his final bout at Mania with Reigns. This has been talked about for years, and Johnson wanted it in Los Angeles if he could do it.“
Previously there were plans to hold WrestleMania 38 in Dallas, but The Rock was more interested in doing the bout in Los Angeles, so they went with Brock Lesnar vs. Reigns.
So one of The Rock’s last chances to return to the ring would be at WrestleMania 39, the event that thousands of WWE fans dream of.
